Jeanie Kline ran a half marathon years ago, but had strayed from her running habit. Then a few months ago, Kline, who is associate vice president for academic affairs at the University of Mary Washington, heard that the school was gathering team members for a relay. In Sunday’s Historic Half, Kline will be one of 13 UMW students and staff members who will each run one mile, and then UMW webmaster Seth Casana, dressed as the Eagle mascot, will run the last one-tenth mile to the finish line. “I thought it would be a good incentive to get back into a little running,” Kline said. “We have kind of the whole range of people interested in running,” said UMW spokeswoman Teresa Mannix. She said the idea came up when UMW started working with the Marine Corps on the event last summer. Whether you’re a runner or a spectator, look for UMW’s water stop at mile marker 4. Mannix said they’re hoping to create a festive atmosphere to keep runners going, and they’ll even have a food vendor to try to draw a crowd to cheer the runners on from their post at William Street and Sunken Road. “It brings attention to our centennial, and it’s just going to be fun to see the eagle run the end of the race,” Mannix said.
