A former Caroline County deputy and campaign worker for Sheriff Tony Lippa was arrested yesterday by the Virginia State Police after allegations that he sexually abused a child.

Clyde Charles Davenport, 48, of Hanover, was indicted in Caroline County Wednesday on five counts of forcible sodomy of a child under 13 after a state police investigation, said Sgt. Tom Cunningham.

Cunningham said the investigation began last month after a complaint by the Department of Social Services.

The five indictments are based on year-long time frames spanning from December 1998 to December 2003, Cunningham said.

According to a story published in The Free Lance–Star in 2003, Davenport put his name in that year to run for sheriff.

However, he did not continue with his own campaign.

Instead he worked to help Lippa, who won the race and then was re-elected in 2007.

Lippa said Davenport worked on his 2003 campaign staff.

Lippa said Davenport never worked for the sheriff’s office under him. Davenport quit the force before Lippa took over. He was hired in 1988 by then-Sheriff O.J. Moore and left the force in 1997, when Homer Johnson was sheriff.

Caroline County Commonwealth’s Attorney Tony Spencer said Davenport will be arraigned Tuesday in circuit court.

Davenport is being held at Pamunkey Regional Jail under no bond.
