The two suspects in the violent abduction of a food delivery person in Fredericksburg Thursday night were arrested today at a Wal-Mart in Franklin, Va. Jermaine Montgomery, 34, and his girlfriend, 36-year-old Marcey White, are accused of being the persons responsible for the brutal ambush of Yong Hui Zhang. Zhang, 24, was making a delivery for his parents' China Express restaurant when he was attacked behind a vacant apartment at 202 Charles Street and abducted. A large amount of Zhang's blood and one of his shoes was found at the scene; Zhang and his vehicle were still missing as of last night. If Zhang is still alive, he would have to be severely injured, police said. Fredericksburg police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said Montgomery has been identified as the man using Zhang's credit card at the Four Mile Fork Shell station in Spotsylvania shortly after the attack. Police have also identified White as the woman who was with him. White was initially listed as someone police simply wanted to talk to, but that had changed by today. Both suspects have been charged with abduction, conspiracy to commit abduction, carjacking, conspiracy to commit carjacking, credit card theft and conspiracy to commit credit card theft. Carjacking alone carries a potential life sentence. Bledsoe said police have been working on this case around the clock and will continue to do so. She said neither suspect has a listed address, but both are known to spend time in various localities, living temporarily with relatives and associates. They have associates in the Fredericksburg area, but police aren't sure how much time they've been spending here. Police focused on the southeastern Virginia area because White has relatives in Virginia Beach and has also lived in Southhampton County, Bledsoe said. Police knew they went to that area after the attack on Zhang. Zhang left the restaurant at 1500 Jefferson Davis Highway at 9:20 p.m. Thursday with less than $50 cash to make three deliveries, police said. When he hadn't returned by closing time, his relatives contacted police at 10:15 p.m. and asked for assistance.
§18.2-31 of the Virginia code provides for 2 situations: 1. The willful, deliberate, and premeditated killing of any person in the commission of abduction, as defined in § 18.2-48, when such abduction was committed with the intent to extort money or a pecuniary benefit or with the intent to defile the victim of such abduction; 4. The willful, deliberate, and premeditated killing of any person in the commission of robbery or attempted robbery.
As I said in my posting, they are innocent right now. And right now they don't have the murder charges, but if he doesn't show up (and I have the sad feeling he isn't going to - though I hope so much I am wrong like I was with Elizabeth Smart), they're going to add the muder and subsequent murder charges. If they are brought up on the murder charges, and if they are found guilty by the jury beyond more than a reasonable doubt, but pretty much all doubt, then I believe death penalty should apply.
capital punishment, but this type of attack just sickens me. I can't comprehend the total lack of respect for another life when these thugs attack. Our society is taking steps backwards when this happens. I'm hoping for a positive outcome for Mr. Zhang, but if hasn't been to a hospital yet, it probably looks bleak based on the severity of the attack (as reported). Sad... Just sad...
Good job capturing these predictors. Hopefully they will lead the police to Yong Hui. Then Give them their day in court. This was a calculated and planned crime aimed at a easy target. Look forward to hearing the criminal history of Mr. Montgomery.
The charges do not yet include murder. Do you believe in the death penalty for the charges on the table so far (credit card theft, abduction, car jacking)? Let's hope Mr. Zhang is still alive.
