Caroline man dies in head-on crash

56-year-old Port Royal man killed after trucks collide, police say.

Date published: 7/24/2008

A Port Royal man died Tuesday evening when his pickup truck was hit head-on by another truck in Westmoreland County, police said.

Frankie L. Walburn, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Tom Cunningham of the state police.

Cunningham said the trucks collided when 18-year-old Lamont Bryson Hendershot IV of Montross swerved over a double yellow line on State Route 3, about a half-mile west of State Route 634, in an effort to pass another vehicle.

He said Hendershot’s 2007 GMC Sierra collided head-on with Walburn’s 1994 Dodge Ram 1500.

Hendershot, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Mary Washington Hospital with minor injuries.

However, Walburn and his passenger, Darryl Gibson, 33, also of Port Royal, were not wearing seat belts at the time of the 4 p.m. crash, Cunningham said.

Gibson was seriously injured. He was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital, Cunningham said. His condition was not available today.

Trooper J.N. Brooks investigated the crash, and charges are pending, Cunningham said.

Double solid lines (posted by alabamian , July 24, 2008 5:50 pm)
apparentally do not mean the same thing in Westmoreland County. My husband and I were returning home Tuesday and had two cars with young women driving pass us on a double line. We had children in the car at the time. If you want to kill yourself, do so somewhere that it does not affect a driver that is driving by the rules.

They didn't get their ages right either. Don't believe everything you read in the paper.

they were wearing seat belts (posted by riley6 , July 24, 2008 4:08 pm)
They were wearing seat belts. The paramedics had to cut them off when they used the jaws of life to cut them out of the truck!

Well Duh I guess (posted by taxpayer , July 24, 2008 3:39 pm)
they weren't wearing seat belts because they weren't planning on getting hit head on that day. Another gross case of abuse by an 18 year old driving brand new vehicle probably way too fast. I'm sorry for the family of Mr. Walburns.
