A Port Royal man died Tuesday evening when his pickup truck was hit head-on by another truck in Westmoreland County, police said.

Frankie L. Walburn, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Tom Cunningham of the state police.

Cunningham said the trucks collided when 18-year-old Lamont Bryson Hendershot IV of Montross swerved over a double yellow line on State Route 3, about a half-mile west of State Route 634, in an effort to pass another vehicle.

He said Hendershot’s 2007 GMC Sierra collided head-on with Walburn’s 1994 Dodge Ram 1500.

Hendershot, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Mary Washington Hospital with minor injuries.

However, Walburn and his passenger, Darryl Gibson, 33, also of Port Royal, were not wearing seat belts at the time of the 4 p.m. crash, Cunningham said.

Gibson was seriously injured. He was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital, Cunningham said. His condition was not available today.

Trooper J.N. Brooks investigated the crash, and charges are pending, Cunningham said.
