Spotsylvania man charged in connection with the sexual assaults against cleaning women at multiple area hotels. Date published: 9/24/2008

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man last week in connection with the sexual assaults against cleaning women at multiple area hotels. Derrick Gosnell, 25, of Spotsylvania is charged with two counts of attempted rape, one count of sodomy and one count of abduction in Spotsylvania, said 1st Sgt. Liz Scott of the Sheriff’s Office. Fredericksburg Police Department spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said Gosnell is also charged with one misdemeanor count of sexual battery in Fredericksburg. Gosnell’s charges stem from attacks made on women at two hotels in Spotsylvania at the Super 8 and the Heritage Inn and one attack in Fredericksburg at the Best Western. In all three encounters, the victims told police that their attacker either came into their room and forced them into the adjoining bathroom or tried to force them into the bathroom, where he would then assault them. Scott said Spotsylvania detectives were able to send off DNA evidence taken from the hotel assaults to be analyzed and found a match to Gosnell, who had a previous criminal record.
