The program is coming together for the May 1 reunion.
It all begins at 12:30 p.m., with tours of the school and free time for eating and reminiscing in Joy Park behind the school (weather permitting).
A one-hour walking tour of the residential area will begin at 1 p.m.
The formal program starts at 2 p.m. in Joy Park with a color guard and opening remarks by Capt. Catherine Hanft, base commander, and Alice Herring, principal of Dahlgren School.
Then Dahlgren School students will offer a musical performance, as well as a drama presentation—with special appearances by “the May Queen of 1963” and “Adm. John Adolphus Dahlgren.”
Finally a panel discussion involving alumni will be offered, concluding about 3:30 p.m.
The final bell will ring at 4 p.m.
Join us on May 1 to reconnect with as many as 200 alumni of Dahlgren School!
Rose Hancock’s six children all attended Dahlgren School, and some of them will be coming to the reunion. As she nears her 105th birthday, Rose has many wonderful memories of Dahlgren, past and present. Read about her in the April 21 Free Lance-Star or on Fredericksburg.com. Then, on April 28, read about Mike Gould, the school superintendent whose 1,600-mile-long, West Point-to-Puerto Rico school district includes Dahlgren School.
Update
An appearance by “Rear Adm. John Adolphus Dahlgren,” the namesake of the base, will be part of the May 1 Dahlgren School reunion.
Don’t forget to register today on this Web site. You’re also invited to share your memories and pictures of Dahlgren School on this site.
Alumni from all classes invited to celebrate base school’s nine decades of service.
It began almost 90 years ago with a handful of students on an isolated Navy base along the shores of the Potomac. Today Dahlgren School continues a tradition of excellence that has made it a special part of thousands of graduates’ lives.
On May 1, 2010, the preschool-through-eighth-grade facility, operated by the Department of Defense, will be hosting what might be its largest alumni reunion ever. Graduates from the West Coast to King George County will converge on the school on Saturday, May 1, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Alumni from the 1930s through recent years are expected to attend.
There will be a panel discussion among distinguished alumni, tours of the school and housing area, performances by current Dahlgren School students and a revival of the old tradition of a May Day festival, complete with a court. The event, which also will feature food and drink vendors, is scheduled to end at 4 p.m.
All those attending the reunion will need to show a picture ID at the main gate to the base.
Also, attendees should register before May 1 by calling 540 653-8822 or by indicating their plans to attend on the Web site.
