Good Samaritan becomes a victim
Police say Stafford woman had stopped to help elderly crash victims on I-95 when someone stole her debit card and laptop.
Date published: 2/3/2009

BY ELLEN BILTZ

A good Samaritan who stopped to help an elderly couple who crashed their car yesterday afternoon didn’t get the Karma returned.

The 20-year-old woman from Stafford pulled over on Interstate 95 near milemarker 114 in Caroline County to assist the couple, whose car had rolled several times, said Sgt. Tom Cunningham of the Virginia State Police.

But when the woman returned to her car some time later, she found her purse overturned and her wallet and laptop missing.

“It’s particularly disturbing because she stopped to help and she turned out a victim,” Cunningham said.

He said the woman’s debit card was used at the Exxon Mobil in Ruther Glen and then later at another Caroline County business, and police were able to obtain surveillance photos from the Exxon.

Cunningham said the suspect likely left the scene and immediately purchased items with the woman’s debit card at the gas station.

No one saw the suspect near the woman’s car during the incident, Cunningham said, and the only physical description comes from his portrayal in the surveillance photos.

He is described as a white male with medium build, short hair and a goatee. His height and age are unknown.

Cunningham said the couple involved in the crash were from Rhode Island. Both were injured and taken to VCU Medical Center, but their injuries were non life-threatening.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact Trooper B. S. Butchyk at 804/553-3445 or 800/552-9965.

Good Samaritans are very scarce. (posted by kspecial , Feb. 4, 2009 7:06 am)    0 likes
As of November 1, 2007, there were 712 Samaritans living almost exclusively in Kiryat Luza on Mount Gerizim near the city of Nablus/Shechem in Samaria (now a part of the West Bank) and in the city of Holon in Israel.

He's much lower than that! However, I don't think the FLS will allow me to say it under their terms of service! The woman who stopped to help should be commended for her caring attitude. I hope this incident doesn't deter her from helping others in the future.
