Colonial Beach official says mayor "comes in while people are on the phone and just stands there and stares and threatens people with his overall body language." Date published: 5/1/2009
Three weeks ago, Colonial Beach Town Council evicted Mayor Frederick C. Rummage from his office at Town Hall. Last night, they barred him from other offices in the building.
A resolution introduced by Councilman Ronald "Sparky" Ridgely said that Rummage twice entered town offices this week and "interfered with and interrupted the ability of the staff to perform their work." "This intrusion," the resolution said, "has caused some members of Town staff to feel uncomfortable, fearful and intimidated." Rummage "comes in while people are on the phone and just stands there and stares and threatens people with his overall body language," said Ridgely. "We were faced with a massive walk-out of town employees or a class-action lawsuit," said Councilman David H. Coombes. Council evicted Rummage April 9 from the office used on a daily basis by previous Mayor G.W. "Pete" Bone, Jr. "The presence of [Rummage] at Town Hall on a daily basis is interfering with and obstructing the efficient operations of the town," council said in its eviction resolution. The latest resolution bars Rummage from Town Hall offices unless he has a previously arranged appointment or has been invited by Town Manager Valda J. Foulds. Council ordered Foulds and Town Attorney Andrea Erard to send Rummage a no-trespassing notice. Should Rummage violate the notice, "the Police Chief is hereby directed to take any and all appropriate action to remove Mayor Rummage from Town Hall," the resolution said. All of the council's six members voted for the resolution. Rummage voted "present." Rummage declined comment "on advice of counsel." - Frank Delano, The Free Lance-Star
Noone who intimadates or threatens employees should be in a position of leadership or control of any kind. Even if all of this is half the truth....is is not appropriate. There is always one member on the council who blows it for all those trying to do something good.
Mr Rummage, you owe the employees and your towns people an apology. No matter how large the infringment. Get off the defensive and be a respectful and approriate leader or get off the council. We have had too much time waisted already.
"The Town That Time Forgot"..... What a waste of pristine space.... The State leaders should be ashamed at the condition of Virginia's "Second Largest Beach".... A lot of talking gets done but nothing of substance for the Town...
This town council likes to do a lot of close door type meetings, This mayor seems like he wants to keep things more accessible to the towns people. Just seems a little fishy to me.
The mayor can't go to town hall? There must be something missing in this story because it just doesn't make sense. The reporter is not presenting a coherent story. Maybe there can be clarification.
Perhaps another resolution should be made to include barring all of the Council from Town Hall offices without an appointment. Why pick on just one member of the Town Council?
