Spotsy GM plant closing for 6 weeks
Closure is part of national production slowdown for troubled automaker.
Date published: 5/7/2009

General Motors will temporarily close the GM Powertrain plant in Spotsylvania from June 1 to July 12.

A national slowdown in the production of GM cars and trucks has trickled down to affect the Spotsylvania plant, which produces torque converter clutches.

Most GM plants in North America will be temporarily closed at some point this year, said GM spokesman John Raut. In April, GM announced it will produce 190,000 fewer vehicles this year than anticipated.

“We ship the torque converter clutch plates to transmission plants, who in turn ship to assembly plants,” Raut said. “There’s just no need in the pipeline because those facilities will be down as well.”

The GM plant in Spotsylvania is usually closed for two weeks in July for employee vacation. This will extend the closure another four weeks.

The closure will affect 64 hourly employees and 14 salaried workers. Hourly workers will be eligible for state unemployment assistance during the plant closure, Raut said.

Through an agreement between GM and United Auto Workers, GM will pay hourly workers most of the difference between the unemployment assistance and their salary.

Salaried workers will receive a percentage of their pay. GM has not disclosed the percentage.

The gravy train is over (posted by CenterFlank , May 7, 2009 8:38 pm)    0 likes
I drive a 2000 Ponitac Firebird, with 210'ish thousand miles. It still runs fantastic, and other than changing oil, brakes, etc, have had virtually no trouble with it. We bought it used with about 35k miles in 2002. For those who complain about American made quality, have bought into false "issues". The American mfgs, have offered 100K warrenties for years so the "big issues are covered. Problem is "legacy cost's" and labors unwillingness to admit as our President so Wrongly says, EVERYONE must sacrifice

Haven't been paying attention then: "Toyota shuts down all but one assembly line The automaker cuts production to meet falling global demand, trying to save jobs." http://money.cnn.com/2009/02/05/news/international/toyot a_assembly/ GM made what Americans wanted. Folks LIKE SUVs... even all the foreign makers had to start making SUVs for the American market.... so they ALL made the cars that Americans wanted - everyone one of the manufacturers domestic and foreign offered multiple models of SUVs.

I wonder how much a GM employee (posted by Nicksmama , May 7, 2009 8:10 pm)    0 likes
pays to belong to UAW. Seems like it might be a fair price considering they are making up the difference (for hourly) between what unemployment pays and their salary. From what I understand, if you collect any money while you are collecting unemployment, it counts against your unemployment. How are UAW/GM people getting around this? Why is GM so quiet as to the percentage they are paying their salaried employees not to work.

whether you drive a vehicle (posted by jaeshuan , May 7, 2009 6:02 pm)    0 likes
from a manufacturer with 2.1 problems per 100 vehicles or 2.3 problems per 100 vehicles doesnt matter. I dont think the general population understands thats how close "quality" is amongst manufacturers. one thing toyota wont do is issue a recall, youve never heard them recall any of their vehicles for having faulty airbags that deploy without a collision. Go do some research about that.. and If you drive a toyota, remember at any time you might get popped in the head by your airbag.
