GM to close Fredericksburg-area Powertrain plant in Spotsylvania.

General Motors announced today that it plans to close the Spotsylvania Powertrain plant by December 2010.
The Spotsylvania plant is the only GM facility in Virginia. The plant opened in 1979, and GM recently invested $3.1 million in the facility so workers could create single-plate and dual-plate 6-speed clutches. The plant employed about 80 hourly workers as of March. Thousands of torque converter clutches for four- and six-speed vehicles are created at the plant every day. The plant used to be a 24-hour, three-shift operation. Today there is one shift. The Spotsylvania Department of Economic Development said it would be working with the affected employees to try to help them find new employment after the plant closes, Bill Freehling reports in his blog.
