Child killed by lightning, another injured in Spotsy

Two children were hit by lightning this evening in Massaponax. One was killed.

Date published: 6/3/2009

One boy was killed and another injured when they were struck by lightning this evening while playing baseball in Spotsylvania County.

Chelal Matos, 12, a Chancellor Middle School student, was pronounced dead shortly after he was taken to Mary Washington Hospital, said 1st Sgt. Liz Scott of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.

Scott said the second boy, who is 11, was taken to Mary Washington Hospital and was then airlifted to VCU Medical Center in Richmond. Scott said the youngster was in “very grave, critical condition.”

The report of the lightning strikes came in to the Sheriff’s Office at 6:26 p.m., Scott said, as the boys were playing baseball in the Spotsylvania Little League at Lee Hill Park, across from Lee Hill Elementary School. She said Lt. R.W. Gill responded to the scene in six minutes. When he arrived, two nurses who were attending the game were performing CPR on the boys, who were later taken to the hospital.

According to Scott, the umpires had halted the game because of the storm, but the two boys were playing catch in the field under the supervision of their parents. Scott said the lightning struck Matos, and the charge then transferred to the other boy.

Melvin Brown, principal at Chancellor Middle, said last night that a crisis team was being assembled and would be available at the school this morning to speak with students and faculty.

Brown also said the school will hold a faculty meeting at 7 a.m. tomorrow. Faculty members are being notified with the details that are available, Brown added.

To friends & family (posted by smgj , June 5, 2009 12:17 am)
My prayers go out to al the friends and family of these 2 boys. It's a tragic event. Just know that God takes the best and he is in a better place. And for the other little boy, I hope he makes it. Everyone just needs to pray.

Please tell me you are not a nurse at MWH. I would be disgusted to know that one of my co-workers was outright placing blame on the parents. Don't you think they have enough grief and guilt to deal with? I agree that it was not a responder issue, but this is not the time or the place to point fingers. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends involved in this tragedy.

A time to be touched.... (posted by o2bshopin , June 4, 2009 7:40 pm)
My son, who is 7, was upset at hearing the story in a Stafford County school this morning. This is wide spread and we as humans push the envelope everyday. May we stop and pray for those parished or ailing and take time to hug/kiss our loved ones & be thankful that we are granted another day to be here on earth. Our hearts & prayers go out to the boys families. Please don't spend time looking for someone to blame when you can spend time on trying to PREVENT it in the future. After all we are only human

Tragedy (posted by leisacourt , June 4, 2009 3:40 pm)
This is a tragedy, prayers are needed. my heart aches for those parents. I continue to pray for both families. My husband and son were at the field. Their lives will never be the same. My son left for the game full of himself and excited, he returned broken and hurting. I hugged him while he cried trying to understand why something so horrible could happen. I held him all night long while he tried to sleep, but just couldn’t. I would ask that during this trying time, instead of trying to point fingers we

This is very tragic (posted by kemcclta , June 4, 2009 2:06 pm)
It seems that there is ample blame and anger in many of these posts. That is shameful. My son attends school with both of these boys and I must say that no one is to blame. Accidents happen! Freak accidents happen. I send my sincere condolence and well wishes to both families as well as all whom are affected by this experience. I feel that this is a real wake up call for all those whom have posted negative things to realize "life is short" dont waste it blaming! Live and love!
