Police said today that the drivers of a dirt bike and ATV that collided yesterday were operating the vehicles illegally on a state-maintained road and driving at high rates of speed when they collided, killing one teen.

The passenger of the dirt bike, who died at the scene of the crash, has been identified as 19-year-old Justin Krombholtz of Lake of the Woods, said 1st Sgt. Liz Scott of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the dirt bike, also 19, sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Scott said. The teen, of Towles Mill Road, has not been identified.

The driver of the ATV with which the dirt bike collided around 5:30 p.m. yesterday, is an 18-year-old man also of Towles Mill Road. Scott said that teen suffered life-threatening head injuries and thoracic trauma and is listed at Mary Washington Hospital. He also has not been identified.
