Baby sitter charged with murder in infant's death
3-month-old Spotsylvania child died from Shaken Baby Syndrome, authorities say.
Date published: 9/10/2009

A 3-month-old Spotsylvania boy died yesterday as the result of being shaken by his babysitter, police said.

Sheriff's First Sgt. Liz Scott said deputies went to 10008 Windridge Drive about noon Tuesday in response to a 911 call from a woman who said the infant she was babysitting was unresponsive.

The child, Elijah Lynch-Hobbs, was not breathing when Deputy Larry Dibella arrived. He and Sgt. Tim Bryner performed CPR on the baby until medical personnel got there.

The child was taken to Mary Washington Hospital and then to the VCU Medical Center, where he died yesterday. He suffered bleeding from the brain and retinal hemorrhaging, Scott said, and his death was ruled Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Scott said the babysitter, Larisa Thomas, later told Detective Twyla DeMoranville and others that she shook the baby because he was crying. Elijah and his 2-year-old brother had been at Thomas' home about 30 minutes Tuesday, but Thomas has babysat for the family for several years, police said. Thomas' own children were also in the house at the time, but no one else was hurt.

Thomas, 27, was charged with second-degree murder and felony child neglect. She is being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

Perhaps you don't know her that well wither (posted by JustSo , Oct. 11, 2009 9:05 pm)    0 likes
The article says that she confessed. Other radio stations, news articles, online reports state that she confessed. And she confessed to others, not only the detective. Perhaps you don't know the person you think you do. Have you had a checkup on your child that she watched? She is guilty and needs to go to jail for a very long time.

There is no other side to the story. This baby is dead. This woman has confessed. The pain of the baby's family and extended family is beyond comprehension. I know the family, know what happened and know that the woman admitted it. She not only killed this baby, she has destroyed many families. There is not enough punishment.

WWID? (posted by mom2b89 , Sep. 11, 2009 6:43 am)    0 likes
What would I do? I have a 3 month old myself and I couldn't begin to imagine losing her. How devastating this has to be to the mother and family. I understand newborns can be very stressful because sometimes they cry and after you've tried everything continue to cry, As a babysitter she should be able to deal with it this type of behavior. I am sure she has heard of this type of death with infants before. She needs to be punished.

Can't believe this (posted by , Sep. 11, 2009 12:00 am)    0 likes
As a mother myself, I could never ever even fathom harming anyone else's child. not even raise a finger to someone else's child. In this report it looks like she admitted to shaking the child. Murder is murder. Under God and man's law murder is wrong. She should be held accountable for what she did. She should ask to be locked UNDER the prison let alone just a cell. She's a murderer!
