A Locust Grove woman picked up three felony charges Thursday as the result of her reaction to the fine she received for a traffic infraction, police said.

Lynnette Angela Muhammad, 43, was in Spotsylvania General District Court Thursday on a charge of drinking while driving, Sheriff’s spokeswoman Liz Scott said. She was found guilty of improper driving, a lesser offense, court records show.

Scott said that after Muhammad was told that her fine was $200, she began yelling at the court clerk. The clerk’s window is not in the courtroom, but the commotion was so loud that it disrupted court and caused deputies to go find out what was going on.

Deputy Chris Giles, who made the August 23 traffic stop that led to Muhammad being in court Thursday, told her to calm down. Scott said Muhammad responded by banging her fists on the clerk’s counter.

When Giles and another deputy tried to place her into custody, police said, Muhammad fell to the floor and began kicking the deputies. She was eventually handcuffed and placed into a holding cell. While being placed into the cell, Scott said, she bit another deputy.

Muhammad was charged with three counts of felony assault on a law-enforcement officer and disorderly conduct. She was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

None of the deputies Muhammad is accused of assaulting required medical attention.
