Election ensures county's membership in commuter rail service. Date published: 11/3/2009

The two pro-Virginia Railway Express incumbents won re-election to the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors last night, ensuring the county’s membership to the commuter rail service. Supervisor Gary Skinner, who represents the Lee Hill District, won easily over challenger D.J. McGuire. Skinner won with 58 percent of the vote based on unofficial results. Supervisor Benjamin Pitts defeated Chris Yakabouski, who held the seat from 2004 to 2007. Pitts took 54 percent of the vote. Both Pitts and Skinner supported VRE membership, which became a top issue in the election after the Board of Supervisors decided in August to join VRE, but opted to wait until after last night’s election to make it official in February.
I've spent all my life living along I95 and have seen the unrestricted growth first hand. The houses and traffic are already here and if they ever build the HOT/HOV lanes down here it will really ramp up. A Spotsy VRE will be essential to handling it when it happens...and it will happen.
sence was , when the developers build all those homes around the VRE station and bring more people in to Spotsylvania. There will be a need for more fire and rescue more schools more services none of which the residential property's can support.Oh, I forgot to mention the two or more cars per house hold that will impact our already over burdened roads. What will all this do to our quality of life . Oh but we'll worry about that tomorrow, because a handfull of rich people want a free ride to work.
Since the VRE can only succeed with government subsidies and you're sticking it to ALL Spotsylvania residents to support this abominattion, how about jacking up VRE ticket sales to match the increased costs whcih will be shoved down our throats? I am tired of more government taxes and spending, especially when it goes to support less than 1% of the population.
I spent the first 45 years of my life in "member jurisdictions" and the past 4 as a scab/scum or whatever Spotsy riders have been dubbed. This should have happened years ago...way to go VRE voters!
Looks like our residents have chosen common sense solutions to our quality of life issues over partisan politics. VRE was a big issue in the race, but not the only one, although it looks like it didn't play the way people thought it might. For most voters, it takes more than one issue to swing the ballot lever. When all the issues are considered, people realized that how we can live our lives matters.
