US Supreme Court refuses to stop sniper execution
The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to block Tuesday's scheduled execution of sniper mastermind John Allen Muhammad.

Date published: 11/9/2009

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to block Tuesday's scheduled execution of sniper mastermind John Allen Muhammad.

The Court did not comment Monday on why it refused to consider his appeal.

Muhammad is scheduled to die by injection at a Virginia prison for the slaying of Dean Harold Meyers at a gas station during a three-week spree in 2002 across Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Muhammad and his teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, were also suspected of fatal shootings in other states, including Louisiana, Alabama and Arizona. Malvo is serving a life sentence.

Muhammad still has a clemency petition before Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.

Muhammad's attorney, Jonathan Sheldon, says "Virginia will execute a severely mentally ill man who also suffered from Gulf War Syndrome the day before Veterans Day."

As a veteran who served for 16 years... (posted by brandonj , Nov. 9, 2009 11:13 pm)    0 likes
I have absolutely no problem with ths execution. In fact, if they'd like to have me come flip the switch, I'd be glad to take a day off work. I know quite a few veterans that feel the same way. He's not mentally ill and as far as "Gulf War Syndrome," the last time I checked it didn't make you go out and kill a bunch of people in a methodical planned manner. This wasn't someone who snapped. He was a vicious caluclating killer who deserves to die.

obligation to advocate for his client? How does anyone know whether or not he takes personal pleasure in what may be, to him, just doing his job?

Mr. Sheldon yes I can believe that the Commonwealth Of VA is going to execute that dirt bag you call a client. I lived in Virginia most of my life and never once feared anything, that was until the day your "client" came to the area. I think the families that he destroyed should be the ones to give him his cocktail of drugs. I have no pity for a cold blooded killer.

considering what it cost to execute someone (posted by derarzt , Nov. 9, 2009 6:24 pm)    0 likes
vs. life in prison - is it better to put him in solitary confinement 23 1/2 hrs/day, no TV, movies, books, nothing? Or is that "cruel & unusual"? Tomorrow he'll go to sleep, & except for the pinch of starting the IV, feel nothing. Want revenge & deterence? Public hanging, & donate the corpse to the nearest medical school anatomy lab.
