There is no rain in the forecast through this weekend, but Massaponax Athletic Director Jim Manchester still doesn’t see how the Panthers’ football field can dry out. “Where the players stand, I have 20 yards of water just sitting there,” Manchester said. “I can’t even begin to get the field dry.” So to escape the muddy mess, the Panthers will make a change. Massaponax has moved its Northwest Region, Division 5 football championship game against Osbourn to Liberty High School in Bealton. The game will still be played at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Liberty has a field turf facility, and was used on Nov. 14 as a home field for Brooke Point and Colonial Forge playoff games, when rain soaked the area. Manchester said the topography at Massaponax makes it especially tough on the football stadium. The field sits at the bottom of the hill, collecting all the runoff from the baseball and softball fields above. “Our field is just absolutely water-logged,” he said. “We can’t play anywhere on it without sinking into the soil.”
