Two brothers were charged Thursday following a pursuit during which they wrecked after driving nearly 100 mph on a curvy, rural road in Spotsylvania County, police said. Spotsylvania's sheriff’s spokeswoman 1st Sgt. Liz Scott said about 2:30 p.m., a red Pontiac Grand Prix passed Deputy D. Dougherty on West Catharpin Road driving 62 mph in a 45 mph zone. When Dougherty activated his emergency lights, the vehicle started going faster. Scott said Dougherty stopped the pursuit as the suspect neared 100 mph because it was too dangerous. He continued driving in the direction the vehicle was heading. A short time later, Scott said, Dougherty found the vehicle sitting sideways in a front yard at the intersection of West Catharpin and Pamunkey roads. The two homeowners flagged him down and told him two men had fled on foot. A third male was still in the vehicle. The investigation revealed that the two who fled were brothers. More deputies and an Orange County dog joined in the subsequent search. Matthew Wayne Blevins, 22, of Unionville was found on a dirt road off Pamunkey Road driving a vehicle he had just stolen, Scott said. He resisted 1st Sgt. Chris Dunavant’s attempt to arrest him, but was eventually handcuffed and taken into custody. Scott said Matthew Blevins was still in the area looking for his brother. He was charged with grand larceny of an auto, assault and battery on a law-enforcement officer, resisting arrest and driving on a revoked license. He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond. Cody Allen Blevins, 21, was still at-large yesterday. He is charged with speeding, eluding police, reckless driving, driving on a revoked license and hit and run. The male who stayed in the wrecked vehicle was not charged.
By the way stone32 - obviously they ARE locked up if they were charged with all that =\ lol And I agree amazed - no deputy should ever let their emotions get the best of them. Or they wouldnt be able to do their job properly and definately wouldnt stay a deputy for long. Besides - what they did was beyond ignorant for sure. They have done a lot of ignorant things lately, but they werent being idiots bc they like it or just to 'have fun'. There is no 'excuse' but addiction is ruthless. They need help.
Both of them were good hearted, talented, hard-working boys. 2 of 6 children. Uncles, sons, brothers, nephews, grandsons etc. What they did was stupid & for a yr now neither of them was Matt or Cody anymore. Heroine took both of them and they need help. The last options left was jail or death for them so Im happy it came to this and they are safe now and able to get clean. They & all who have been hurt in the midst of their addiction deserve it. I pray to God everyday for them to get better.
Sorry, Amazed...I forgot to be PC. Let me try again. I hope these two wonderful young men have learned their lesson and no misfortune befalls them for risking the lives of deputies and anyone else who travels that road. I am sure they meant no harm and were just having fun. I am sure their upbringing played some part in their actions and we, as a society, should shoulder the blame for their misfortune and reward them in some way for their utter stupidity. Better?
Way to make your mama proud, boys.
I sincerely hope the law prevails and they are charged with, tried and convicted of, assault and battery. What the drivers did was stupid but what you "hope" is no smarter, especially for a deputy who wants to stay a deputy..
