A Fredericksburg man was arrested Friday after he kicked in a man's door and tried to drag away his former girlfriend, police said.

City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the incident took place about 4:40 p.m. in the 1600 block of Charles Street.

The suspect kicked in the front door of a home and demanded that the woman inside come out.

The man told the suspect to leave, and both men walked to the street in front of the house while arguing.

Bledsoe said the suspect then picked up a large paving stone and threw it at the resident. He then grabbed the woman, who'd come to the doorway, and pulled her across the porch and down the sidewalk.

The woman started screaming and the suspect let her go and ran off, police said.

The woman identified the man and directed police to his home on Princess Anne Street. Officers found him there and took him into custody.

Edward Washington, 42, was charged with abduction, attempted malicious wounding, breaking and entering and assault.

He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
