Local woman wins nationally televised halftime football competition. Date published: 12/7/2009
Carley Rodick, a 2008 graduate of Chancellor High School, won a $123,000 scholarship at Saturday's Big 12 football championship game in Arlington, Texas.
The money will come in handy. Rodick, who is in her second year at George Mason University, is in the process of applying to nursing schools. To win the money, she competed against one other contestant to see who could throw the most footballs into a giant replica Dr Pepper can in 45 seconds. The contest took place at halftime of the Texas-Nebraska game on the football field in Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Rodick had to keep her composure in front of 70,000 people and television cameras that were broadcasting the game live across the country. Rodick said she's never considered herself much of a football player, but she did practice throwing for a few days before the competition. Dr Pepper paid to fly her out to Texas for the game, where she had 15th-row seats on the 40-yard line. She stayed in Arlington for three nights, and got to take a few practice throws the day before the game in an empty Cowboys Stadium. The whirlwind all started in early November, when Rodick entered a bottle cap code into a Web site contest form at her mom's suggestion. "They called me a week later and told me I'd won," she said. "It was pretty surreal." Once she got on the field, she said, “It was pretty intimidating.” Rodick said she’s never thought she had a great arm. She spent a few days practicing before she went to Texas, and she said it took her a little while to get into a rhythm at the game. Still, her performance was good enough for a frustrated Nebraska fan to write on a Web chat board, “Let's put in Carley Rodick in as QB. ... How much worse can things get with 32 yards of total offense in the first half?”
hear that there are actual winners from those codes under the bottle caps.
That's pretty cool. Good job!
