Spotsylvania woman killed in crash
Police say driver had a heart attack, causing the fatal crash.
Date published: 12/7/2009

One woman was killed and a man was critically injured after a single-vehicle crash in Spotsylvania Saturday, police said.

Deputies responded to the area of Gordon Road near Battle Trace Road just before 8 a.m. for a reported accident.

Police say a 2010 Kia Soul ran off the road, went down an embankment and hit a tree.

The driver of the Kia, William Leighty, 80, was severely injured and was admitted to Mary Washington Hospital's intensive care unit.

The passenger, Doris Leighty, 77, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe William Leighty suffered a heart attack while driving, which caused the crash.

The accident remains under investigation and no charges are expected.

thx marymc. I remember Bill well as he gave me one of my first jobs of my late teens at the Dumfries shop. I remember him with a good sense of humor, a great smile and infectious laugh. I grew up a good deal in Bills business. My condolences go out to him.

We appreciate your sentiment. Our father and mother were delivering the Freelance Star at the time. BTW, exact years 1969-1986.
