Gov. Bob McDonnell's signature would extend rule through July 1, 2011. Date published: 2/24/2010
By KELLY HANNON
A limited group of hybrid owners will likely have another year to use carpool lanes on Interstate 95 at rush hour, regardless of the number of people inside the car. Both houses of the Virginia General Assembly have passed a bill extending the exemption for clean special fuel vehicles in High Occupancy Vehicle lanes. The exemption was set to expire on June 30, 2010. Now, if Gov. Bob McDonnell signs the bill, it will end on July 1, 2011. For more on this story, see tomorrow's Free Lance-Star.
Previous comments are right. HOV is no place for hybrids, unless the extra passengers are present. Stop discouraging carpools. The politicians will only "get it" when the voters send them a message. Voter-imposed term limits. Is it fair? No. Get used to it.
I don't go all the way to the beltway. As for old or new hybrid, I have one of each. When we got the "old" one, we intentionally did not get the special plates.
Folks who owned a hybrid before the ban can buy new hybrids and use the old plates; otherwise you are not exempt from HOV rules with your hybrid. At least the law should include a provision that old hybrid plates cannot be transferred.
What part of High Occupancy Vehicle is causing such confusion among the nimrods in Richmond. I though the goal was to encourage carpooling to cut down on traffic congestion. This has gone on long enough - every year this extend it yet another year. I'm sure a lot has changed since I used the HOV lanes a couple of years ago - But I for one remember seeing many many 1 occupant hybrids jamming up the HOV lanes into DC.
Thats to bad I even wrote my congressmen and explained that the Hybrids are regular gas engined cars on the highway to no avail. Guess another year of congestion with these Hybrids is what we get.
