Board votes unanimously to appoint Hurley president of University.
Hurley, who was previously executive vice president, became acting president on April 1.
At its meeting today, the board of visitors voted unanimously for Hurley to become the school’s official president.
Hurley will succeed Judy Hample, who is leaving UMW June 30 after two years as its first female leader. Hample is currently on a three-month sabbatical.
Hurley has been acting president twice, the first time after William Frawley was fired as president in April 2007 after being charged with driving under the influence twice in two days.
Hurley was vice president for administration and finance at Longwood College for 15 years before coming to Mary Washington in 2000.
Before Hample's resignation, Hurley, 62, had announced plans to retire May 1.
