DMV still dogged by computer glitch
Expect to bring additional documents and wait in even longer lines until the issue is fixed.

The DMV is still unable to process driver’s licenses in its service centers, as a computer server malfunction continues.

In a press release yesterday, the DMV warned drivers that the computer problem continues and that anyone whose license has now expired will have to bring in additional documents when the system is working again.

About two dozen state agencies were affected by a server problem late last week. The state’s information agency, VITA, and technology provider Northrop Grumman worked over the weekend to try to resolve the issue, but the few agencies with the most complex data still are not fully back online. That includes the DMV.

Some people can renew their licenses online or by telephone, and those services are still working, as are other DMV services. DMV spokeswoman Melanie Stokes said last week that the server the DMV uses to store license photos was affected by the outage, which is why the DMV cannot process licenses requiring a photo to be taken.

If your license expired between August 25 and August 30, you will have to bring additional documents that prove you’re a U.S. citizen or legal immigrant. State law now requires proof of legal presence for new licenses or to renew a license that has expired. Acceptable documents include a birth certificate, passport, or other documents that show your full legal name and date of birth (a list can be found here: http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/dmv141.pdf). The DMV requires the original documents, not copies.

The DMV is also warning customers to expect service centers to be even more crowded than usual once the computers are working again.
