A University of Mary Washington student's mother visiting for the school's Family Weekend was assaulted and robbed in a nearby grocery store this afternoon, police said.

The incident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. at the Giant in Eagle Village.

Police say the 50-year-old victim, who is from Chesapeake, had just entered the store when a man came up from behind, grabbed her and stole her purse.

The victim fell to the ground, but managed to get up and chase the suspect through the glass-enclosed exit, where they both fell to the ground. The two struggled briefly before the suspect was able to run outside.

As the suspect fled, a store employee came running through the glass-enclosed exit, hurdled the victim and was able to get a description of the car the suspect left in.

The suspect is described as a clean-shaven black male in his 30s. He wore a black tank top, khaki shorts and a black ball cap. He wore white sneakers and glasses.

He left in a gold Cadillac with Maryland plates. Police say the vehicle is registered to a woman in Oxon Hill, Md.

The victim sustained minor injuries, but declined treatment. Police said the woman's husband and daughter were waiting with their car near the Eagle Landing residence hall adjacent to the grocery store.
