Clear a path for propane trucks
Feb. 10, 2010 10:23 am
I just got the following news release from Tammy Balch, corporate marketing director for Fredericksburg-based Quarles Petroleum Inc. She gives advice to customers awaiting a propane delivery: Help Quarles heat your home quicker! Quarles Energy Services team is working hard to deliver propane and oilheat to your home. Customers can help our drivers by providing a 9-foot-wide clearance for the delivery trucks to reach your home and fill your tank with fuel. Also, please help our service crews locate any underground propane or oilheat tank by marking or clearing around them. Quarles thanks you for your patience and your business during this unusually tough winter.

Don't forget to shovel out fire hydrants
Feb. 8, 2010 11:09 am
I just got the following message from Mark Stone, Stafford County's fire and rescue public information officer, asking people to shovel out the fire hydrants on their streets: The Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department asks the community for assistance in clearing snow from around fire hydrants in their neighborhood. We realize that residents are busy at work "digging out" from the storm, clearing driveways and sidewalks to simply gain access to vehicles and doorways. While doing so, we ask that you take time to clear snow from nearby fire hydrants as well. The large amount of snow accumulation, combined with the after-effects of plowing roads and parking lots has left many local fire hydrants partially or completely buried in snow. This of course creates a challenge for responding firefighters. Critical moments can be lost if time is needed to clear and expose hydrants for water accessibility to responding apparatus. "We ask that residents safely venture out and assess the hydrants in their community, and shovel an area of at least three feet from all sides." said Stafford County Fire and Rescue Chief Rob Brown. "This is a great opportunity to get the kids involved in a valuable community service". If hydrant locations are unknown due to the depth of the snow, residents are asked to contact their local fire and rescue station for assistance in locating them. A list if Stafford County Fire and Rescue stations can be found at http://www.staffordfirerescue.com/content/station/. In addition to blocked fire hydrants, the lingering snow presents additional hazards, including prolonged icy roads due to thaw and freeze cycles, as well as the potential for structure collapse due to the added weight to roofs.

Las Palmas Cafe set to move into University Cafe location
Feb. 7, 2010 3:06 pm
Las Palmas Cafe, a Puerto Rican restaurant that now operates at 707 Caroline St. in Fredericksburg, appears set to move into the former site of the University Cafe at 409 William St. An application made by Las Palmas for a beer, wine and mixed beverage license from the Virginia ABC is posted on the window of the former University Cafe site. Building owner Tommy Mitchell said last week that a restaurant specializing in "ethnic food" had signed a lease for the 8,000 square feet formerly occupied by University Cafe, which closed last month. Click here for a restaurant review we did of Las Palmas last year. Las Palmas, which is run by Jeanette Reyes-Soto, also offers salsa dancing, and the new site would provide them with a much larger space for that.
We'll have more on this later.

Book review: Scott Patterson's "The Quants"
Feb. 7, 2010 8:58 am
SCOTT Patterson's fantastic new book "The Quants" shows the extent to which flawed mathematical models caused the blowup on Wall Street and subsequent damage to the broader economy.
Patterson is a Wall Street Journal reporter whose book describes the massive growth of quantitative-focused hedge funds last decade. The funds were led by mathematical geniuses trained at the country's elite universities. Patterson focuses on four "quants"--Peter Muller, Ken Griffin, Cliff Asness and Boaz Weinstein. Each brought to his fund a mathematical approach that for a time proved wildly successful. Until it didn't. The quants built their models on past market data. Much of the philosophy behind their models was based on the efficient-market theory, which suggests that market prices are almost always correct. Their methods were based on finding small price inefficiencies, making big bets with borrowed money and waiting until prices moved to "correct" levels, thus generating huge profits for their funds. Their fatal flaw was in looking at the market as an entirely rational entity rather than one occasionally swept away by human emotions. As panic selling set in after the collapse of the subprime housing market in 2007, their models broke down. Click here to read the rest of this week's Business Browser column.

Hhgregg's aggressive growth plans featured in WSJ
Feb. 5, 2010 12:08 pm
The aggressive growth plans of Indianapolis-based appliance and electronics retailer hhgregg were featured in an article in today's Wall Street Journal. Hhgregg is in the process of revamping a 33,000-square-foot building in Fredericksburg's Central Park that used to be home to Circuit City. The retailer has been expanding into numerous former Circuit City stores and is poised to become a nationwide competitor to Best Buy, according to the Journal article, which also goes into hhgregg's policies on paying sales commissions and allowing customers to haggle on prices.

Keep those natural gas meters free of snow and ice!
Feb. 5, 2010 9:59 am
Columbia Gas of Virginia is reminding customers to keep their natural gas meter and venting free from snow and ice. The equipment is designed to withstand winter weather, but there's always the chance that hard-packed snow or ice could temporarily stop the flow of natural gas. Customers are urged to clear their meters of snow, particularly the vents (which the pen in this photo is pointing toward). People shouldn't kick or hit natural gas meters to break away snow or ice.

Luxury apartment complex proposed for Celebrate Virginia South
Feb. 4, 2010 5:32 pm
South Carolina-based Johnson Development Associates Inc. plans a 232-unit luxury apartment community on 13.5 acres now owned by the Silver Cos. in Fredericksburg’s Celebrate Virginia South. The land is behind the Virginia Credit Union and would connect to Gordon W. Shelton Boulevard. Johnson Development has developed eight apartment complexes under the Haven brand name, mostly in South Carolina. This would be its first in Virginia. Johnson Development has applied for a special-use permit for the project. Here is the article that ran in today's FLS.
The artist rendering that goes with this post is based on a previous Haven community. The developers anticipate some differences at the Fredericksburg community.

University Cafe rented out
Feb. 3, 2010 1:59 pm
The space that formerly held University Cafe in downtown Fredericksburg has a new tenant, said building owner Tommy Mitchell. He said he couldn't release the name of the business, but said it will be a restaurant that serves ethnic food and a coffeehouse. It should open sometime next month. University Cafe closed last month -- click here for details. One other note -- according to city deeds, the University of Mary Washington paid $3 million for the Country Cookin' property at Eagle Village that we wrote about here. See the FLS business section tomorrow for more on both these stories.

Kybecca closing shop by old Ukrop's store
Feb. 1, 2010 5:36 pm
Kybecca will close its wine store next to the now-closed area Ukrop's store March 2. The Kybecca store and wine bar in downtown Fredericksburg will continue normal operations, and all gift cards are still valid. Co-owner Rebecca Snyder said the decision to close the Spotsylvania County location resulted from the loss of traffic and "synergy" that Ukrop’s, which didn't sell alcohol, provided. Ukrop's closed Saturday, though the First Market Bank branch inside the store will remain open until March 22.
