Courtland 61, Charlottesville 60 FINAL
Mar. 10, 2009 10:35 pm
Giggetts wins it with a free throw with 2.8 left. He missed the second intentionally and Cville lost the rebound out of bounds. It's over. Wild, wild finish

After Luke Sellers' GIGANTIC game-tying 3-pointer with 29 seconds left, Charlottesville sandwiched turnovers around a Courtland turnover. The end result of the wild sequence was Lamar Giggetts getting fouled on a layup attempt with 2.8 seconds left. He's going to the line.

A travel on Giggetts just nullfied a go-ahead basket. Courtland fans are irate, but Adam and I agreed it was the right call. Luke Sellers continues to struggle and is now 1-of-10 from the field. We're thinking that C'ville should stall and burn the last 3:23 off the clock. Why not? There's no shot clock, and they're 14-of-15 from the line. Why give the ball back to Courtland when you don't have to?? Still no C'Ville press.

Giggetts is back in after Courtland was forced to use a timeout because they were fumbling the ball around. Charlottesville si 14-of-15 from the line. The refs are starting to take a beating from this crowd. A minute ago, they called a foul that would have sent hairston to the line, but they reversed it to a travel. C'Ville just took the lead on a rebound and breakout layup. Now Giggets to the FT line trailing by 2 with 4:14 to play.

Giggetts has four fouls and is on the bench. Charlottesville needs to bring the pressure if it wants to win. Courtland has two reserves in the game at this point, with Avery Green also on the bench.

A couple quick updates. Hairston and Giggetts each have 3 fouls. Charlottesville didn't press in the third. They have to now, right?

Courtland 28, Charlottesville 25 HALFTIME
Mar. 10, 2009 9:46 pm
It's like Josh Hairston read this blog or something. He became much more assertive in the second quarter and scored 10 points. He now has 12 for the game. Charlottesville's tallest player, Rashad Shelton, is 6-5--3 inches smaller than Hairston. And Shelton's a reserve, so Hairston has a great opportunity to maximize his height advantage. The Cougars began pumping the ball inside to him, and he had a couple dominant takes to the hoop. Hairston also has 3 rebounds now after failing to grab one in the first quarter. One story developing here is Luke Sellers' struggles. He has three turnovers in the first half and is 0-for-3 from the floor. He needs a shot to fall to get his confidence up. In the meantime, he's trying to play hard defense, and he sucessfully forced a 5-second violation late in the second quarter. Adam and I are particularly impressed by Charlottesville when they attack the basket. When they settle for 3-pointers, it's not pretty for them. The Black Knights are 1-of-7 from 3-point rage. They need to pound it inside and attack Hairston. I know they're small, but they can drive and dish. One last point, Lamar Giggetts has 2 fouls for Courtland. Hairston has 1. Giggetts picked up his second with a considerable amount of time left in the first half, but he managed to avoid picking up his third. I'm thinking Charlottesville comes out pressing in the second half. They built a 9-3 lead doing it in the first quarter. If they can press without committing fouls, this game will swing in their favor.

Courtland 17, Charlottesville 17 END 1st
Mar. 10, 2009 9:21 pm
Some early impressions: Josh Hairston is not getting involved on the offensive end. He has taken only two shots and has only 2 points. The good news for Courtland is that its still tied despite that fact. Charlottesville came out with full-court pressure and turned the Cougars over three times on their first four possessions. But the Black-Knights committed a handful of fouls (they currently have 5 team fouls) so they backed out of it. I saw Courtland buckle under full-court pressure against Landstown in Va. Beach in January. Look for C'ville to revert to that later.

Introductions
Mar. 10, 2009 9:02 pm
Just had to chime in during player intros about Courtland's junior varsity call-up Dominiquez Chew. Chew, a sophomore guard, is only 5-5. Duke-bound center Josh Hairston, on the other hand, is 6-8. Seeing the contrast when they're standing next to each other made me laugh.

Courtland-Charlottesville Pregame
Mar. 10, 2009 8:56 pm
Welcome folks. Rich Campbell here. I'm sitting courtside at Siegel Center along with fellow FL-S scribe Adam Himmelsbach, and we're getting ready for Courtland's Group AA Division 4 tournament semifinal against Charlottesville. We've resurrected the Nationals blog to keep you up to speed on tonight's game. As an aside, I'm guessing Courtland's basketball team could give the Nats trouble on the diamond. Just sayin... The atmosphere in here is a bit disappointing. Only a handful of students from each school appeared to have made the trip. Adam and I estimate a crowd smaller than 1,000. Courtland practiced at 8 p.m. last night to try to get accustomed to tonight's late start. Who knows if that will pay off? But I guess if the Cougars believe it gives them some type of edge, then there's no harm in it. If you're out there reading and you have a question for Adam or me--about the game, the atmosphere, Josh Hairston's dunks, coach J.T. Nino's shirt and tie (blue shirt, yellow tie, dark diagonal stripes), etc.--don't hesitate to post a comment or email me at rcampbell@freelancestar.com. I'll be back soon.

Reports: Teixeira agrees with Yankees
Dec. 23, 2008 3:40 pm
Several reports have surfaced saying that free agent Mark Teixeira has agreed to an 8-year deal with the New York Yankees. The Yankees were thought to be a darkhorse in the Teixeira sweepstakes after signing pitcher C.C. Sabathia to a huge contract at the winter meetings. With the Nationals and Red Sox seemingly leading the chase for Teixeira's services, the Yankees have apparently swooped in at the last moment. Nationals general manager Jim Bowden said earlier this offseason that signing Teixeira was the team's "No. 1 priority." Now it appears it's on to Plans B, C, etc.
