School Board approves personnel agenda

Nov. 18, 2009 4:46 pm

In addition to the resignation of Fred Peatross and the appointment of Valerie Fells, there were some other personnel items approved by the school Board.

Here's the list in a PDF file: www.fredericksburg.com/video/pdfs/2009/112009/caroschoolboard.pdf

One thing to point out is that Cathy McConnell, the principal at Bowling Green Elementary, will leave that post and become the new Director of Instruction. She will be replacing Dr. Shelly Bazemore, who resigned last month to take a job in a different county.

This is not in the pdf, but Clota Gerhardt, director of Finance, will be retiring at the end of the year. They hired a replacement for him at the October meeting.

Also at Monday's meeting:

-The Board reviewed an Internet Filtering Policy and a new Bus Driver's Handbook

Don't forget there is an H1N1 clinic Thursday from 5 pm to 8 pm at the high school. Its on a first come-first serve basis

Fells appointed to fill Caroline school post

Nov. 17, 2009 3:15 am

Fells appointed to fill Caroline school post

The Caroline County School Board last night appointed former board member Valerie Fells to fill the seat vacated by Fred Peat-ross.

Peatross, 75, who took office in January 2008, resigned Nov. 1. He cited health problems as his reason for stepping down.

"My back is in such bad shape and getting to the point where I can't walk," Peatross said yesterday. "I'm not doing any justice for the people of the Reedy Church District serving like I'm serving. They are not getting the representation they deserve, so the best thing for me to do is get out."

After meeting in closed session last night, the board voted 3-0 to appoint Fells to fill the seat until a special election can be held. Tami Redding abstained, saying she disagreed with the process for filling the vacancy.

Fells held the seat before Peatross, but did not seek re-election in 2007.

Brothers push Caroline plan

Nov. 13, 2009 7:21 pm

By Cathy Jett

A1,059-ACRE TRACT of mostly undeveloped land at Carmel Church could become a vibrant, mixed-use development anchored by a commuter rail station.

Key features would include office and industrial space, residential neighborhoods, a big-box center and a park. Land also would be set aside as possible sites for a library, a school and county offices.

Owners Tommy and Litton Thompson, who are brothers and business partners, have submitted a request to Caroline County to rezone the property for planned mixed-use development. They hope it will come before the Planning Commission in a few months.
