We're pining for Trader Joe's
Dec. 30, 2009 6:26 pm
Trader Joe's, are you listening? Every year readers of The Free Lance-Star put the grocery chain at the top of the list of businesses they'd like to see open or expand in the Fredericksburg area. This time was no different. TJ's, as it's known to legions of fans, once again topped the paper's annual Wish List poll. I'll kick off the New Year with an in-depth story of what readers said they wanted and why. Their suggestions ranged from old favorites, such as Cheesecake Factory and P.F. Chang's, to a bevy of new contenders including two Tex-Mex chains. Look for the article in Sunday's business section. In the meantime, here's the complete list of suggestions along with the number of votes each one garnered: Ten votes: Trader Joe's Five votes: Cheesecake Factory, Stein Mart Four votes: Captain George's Seafood Restaurant Three votes: P.F. Chang's, Pottery Barn, Whole Foods Two votes: Barnes & Noble, Coastal Flats, Jose Tejas, Olive Garden, TCBY One vote: Applebee's, Bennigan's, Bloomingdale's, Bob Evans, Boston Market, Carlyle Grand Cafe, Carvel Ice Cream, Christmas Tree Shop, Cook Out, Crate & Barrel, Dave & Brusters, Friendly's, Gap, Garden Ridge, Hamrick's, Homegoods, an ice rink, Johnny Rockets, Krystal, Long John Silver's, Maggiano’s Little Italy, Mike's American, Mimi's Cafe, Nordstrom, Ollie's Bargain Outlet, Papa John's Pizza, Phillips Seafood, Pizza Hut, Potbelly Sandwich Works, Red Lobster, Restoration Hardware, Romano’s Macaroni Grill, Safeway, Sam's Club, Sully's Steak House, Sweet Tomatoes, Sweetwater Tavern, The Baker's Crust, Timbuktu, Uncle Julio's Rio Grande Cafe, Wilkerson's Seafood Restaurant, Williams-Sonoma, a zoo

Tips on shopping safely
Dec. 2, 2009 5:18 pm
Christmas shopping list? Check. Christmas travel plans? Check Making sure you're shopping safely for both? Priceless in the amount of time and aggravation you can save by warding off identity theft. Here are some tips to protect yourself from fraud this shopping season from Demaine Lewis, a Wachovia market president for business banking: - Take the paperless route with online banking: The 2009 Identity Fraud Survey Report from Javelin Strategy & Research shows that some thieves still do it the old-fashioned way—by stealing bank or credit card statements from the mailbox. Reduce your risk of stolen mail by picking up mail promptly and switching to online statements.
- Monitor your activity: Financial institutions such as Wachovia use sophisticated systems to track purchasing and transaction habits so irregularities can be flagged. Register for email or mobile alerts so you can stay informed.
According to Forrester Research Inc.'s independent report, "US Online Holiday Retail Forecast, 2009," analysts expect online retail sales to reach $44.7 billion during the months of November and December 2009, an eight percent increase over 2008. If you’re logging on to shop, keep these tips on hand: - Protect your computer from malware: Crooks are getting smarter with phishing and malware scams. Make sure your computer has the most up to date virus prevention and don’t download any attachment or plug-in without ensuring it is from an authorized site. When making purchases, be sure the website address starts with “https://...” The “s” helps ensure that your information will be passed along in a secure manner.
- Don’t believe in offers that are too good to be true: No one wants to be cynical during the holidays, but if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Watch out for email scams or suspicious messages and report any that may pose to be from your financial institution and report those that try to look like your financial institution to your bank or credit card company.
- Be careful what you share: Unless you initiated the interaction, do not provide sensitive financial information over the Internet or phone, including Social Security numbers, passwords, personal identification numbers (PINs) or account numbers. If the call back number seems suspicious, confirm the phone number from a legitimate source from the organization, such as the back of a credit card or from the company's web site.
Keep the following steps in mind to make sure accounts stay problem-free: - Check your list twice: Review your account activity regularly, especially during big shopping trips. Enroll in mobile banking to check your balance and transactions while on the go, or check your purchase activity online as soon as you get home. Sign up for transaction alerts on your debit or credit card which will notify you of transactions over your threshold.
- Be aware of your surroundings: Cover the pin pad when you enter your pin number. Do not repeat sensitive financial information where it could be overheard.
- Ensure you're protected in case of loss or theft: Check your bank's policy to ensure you are fully protected in case of loss or theft. (When you use Wachovia Online Banking, Wachovia Business Online, and Online BillPay, and when you perform online funds transfers, including funding a new account online, your transactions will be secure and completed correctly as long as you adhere to the terms and conditions of the Customer Agreement for Wachovia Online Services. If you suspect an unauthorized user has accessed your accounts, you are 100% covered for any funds removed from those personal deposit accounts, including loss of interest, insufficient funds and overdraft charges, when you contact us within sixty days of receiving your statement that contains the unauthorized activity.)
- Know your credit report: Review your credit report at least once a year, looking for suspicious or unauthorized transactions. You can get a free credit report once a year from each of the three major credit bureaus at the Annual Credit Report web site: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp.

Ready, set, shop!
Nov. 24, 2009 5:39 pm
Black Friday is just around the corner. That means it's time to start mapping out your battle plan in order to snag the best deals on the busiest shopping day of the year. To help you out, here are some tips: 1. Check out the ads: Thursday's The Free Lance-Star will be bulging with ads, coupons and circulars for Black Friday bargains. Check to see when stores will be opening and how long the time-specific deals will last to organize your shopping schedule. If you want to sign up for the balloon drop of gift cards at Spotsylvania Towne Centre, for example, you need to be in front of Hallmark starting at 5 a.m. 2. Do the research: Hoping to snag a deal on a big-ticket item to go under the Christmas tree? A bargain isn't a bargain if it's a bad product or something you really don't need. Check out publications such as Consumer Reports or do a little digging online before heading to the store to insure that the doorbuster you've got your eye on is really the right thing. 3. Comparison shop: Check the prices in ad circulars and online at such sites as pricegrabber.com to find the cheapest ones. But beware. Some retailers will stick a cheap price on a striped-down product, knowing full well that you'll have to pay extra for necessary parts such as printer cartridges or cables to make it fully operational. 4. Be a night owl or an early bird: Some stores will be offering special "night owl" discounts on Thanksgiving Day, and "early bird" specials on Black Friday. Retailers probably won't have many of these items in stock, and usually don't offer rain checks. So if you really, really want these deals, be sure to get to the store as early as possible. Some retailers, such as Best Buy, will be handing out tickets to the first people in line to make sure that they get what they came for. 5. Ask for gift receipts: If you were thrilled to find a purple sweater for Aunt Margaret, only to find that she absolutely hates that color, including a gift receipt inside the box will make returning it a snap. Oh, and also check store policies. Most major retail chains require receipts for returns and exchanges, and many have shortened the return period and added on restocking fees.

North Carolina Furniture's closing sparks investigation
Nov. 18, 2009 5:24 pm
Order anything recently from North Carolina Furniture Company in King George County? If so, you may be out of luck. The business closed recently, the building is for sale and the phone works only on outgoing calls. The King George Sheriff's office is investigating, and I'll have a story about this and what steps you can take in Thursday's business section. On a more altruistic note, Monkee's, a women's clothing boutique in downtown Fredericksburg, is having a canned food drive Monday through Wednesday for the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. As an incentive, Monkee's is offering a 25% discount for on all fall and winter merchandise to customers who bring in canned food items.

Readers share suggestions for the Eagle Village Giant
Oct. 26, 2009 5:35 pm
What changes would you like to see at the Giant in Eagle Village? Two readers so far have sent in their suggestions after reading my What's in Store? column last Friday. It was about Giant Food resuming negotiations with the University of Mary Washington Foundation after talks stalled during the summer. Susan Howe said she likes shopping at Giant because it's smaller and not as overcrowded as some area grocery stores. She recommended that the Landover, Md.-based chain cater to the college students who will be living in the new dorms going up in Eagle Village or walking over from campus by adding a deli/eating area for pre-made meals that they could eat there or take back to their rooms. Another reader, who only identified himself as "Jon," said that he would like to see the existing building torn down and replaced with a more modern store. "It would be awful to not remodel and leave the store the way it is in 1970s fashion," he said. Jon also said he'd like Giant to increase the number of cashiers during peak times. If you have any suggestions about what you'd like to see happen to the Giant store as Eagle Village is renovated, please contact me at cjett@freelancestar.com or to Giant Food by going to the customer service tab at giantofmaryland.com, then clicking on Contact Consumer Affairs.

CVS is rewarding customers for recycling
Oct. 16, 2009 1:33 pm
Reusable shopping bags are slowly starting to replace the flimsy plastic ones that can clutter the environment if they aren't recycled. Not only do I feel good about using them, but most grocery stores usually knock off a few cents on my bill when I do. Now CVS is giving shoppers who've signed up for CVS’s ExtraCare rewards program an even better incentive. For 99 cents, they'll get a leaf shaped Green Bag Tag card, which can be attached to a cloth bag or knapsack. Make a purchase, get the card scanned and, after every fourth shopping trip, a $1 Extra Care Buck coupon will be printed on your receipt. CVS Caremark Corp. says that most of its 7,000 stores will have the tags within the next two weeks, and the program should be running at all stores by the end of November. Some of the money raised from the 99-cent tags in 2010 will be donated to an ecological cause. As Martha Stewart says, "It's a good thing."

Fuddruckers launches new burger
Oct. 14, 2009 11:05 am
Beef isn’t high on my list of must-haves for dinner, but ever now and then I get a hankering for a big, juicy burger. So I was happy to see that fast-casual hamburger chain Fuddruckers is upgrading the beef it uses, and will roll out its new Fudds Prime burger to its more than 230 North American units by Nov. 17. Fuddruckers says the new burger is made with premium cuts of open-grazing, vegetarian-fed beef from U.S. ranches, and contains no fillers or artificial ingredients. “Better beef makes a better burger,” said CEO Peter Large in a prepared statement. Want to try it without busting the budget? If you go to fuddsprime.com, a new Web site Fuddruckers has launched to promote the Fudds Prime Burger, you can create a poster stating: “Wanted: A Juicy Fudds Prime Burger,” and bring it to any participating restaurant to get a Fudds Prime burger along with French fries and a drink for $7. That’s about a $2 savings.

New Walmart on U.S. 17 will have retailer's latest design
Oct. 12, 2009 3:58 pm
Shopping at a Walmart tends to drive me crazy. The aisles between the shelves are typically filled with bins or stand-alone shelving units, and the shelves themselves are often so high that it's easy to lose sight of the person I'm shopping with if they get distracted. But Walmart's new store design, being rolled out locally at the store opening Wednesday on U.S. 17 in Stafford, addresses those concerns. The aisles are wide and uncluttered, much of the shelving is only a tad over five-feet-high and, as an added bonus, the store has a number of green features from the skylights in the ceiling to the recycled materials used in some of the flooring. They're among a number of updates based on consumer input that the retail giant will be making at 80 percent of its new and existing stores over the next five years. I'll have more details about the U.S. 17 store and the expansion underway at the Walmart near Ferry Farm in Wednesday's business section. Feedback about the changes will be welcome!

NASCAR-themed attraction coming to Kings Dominion?
Aug. 18, 2009 2:23 pm
Kings Dominion will hold a press conference Thursday to announce it's largest capital investment in its 35-year history. The fact that Taylor Earnhardt, youngest daughter of NASCAR racing legend Dale Earnhardt Sr., will be there along with Jeff Steiner, executive vice president and general manager of Dale Earnhardt Inc., and representatives of a roller coaster enthusiast club will be available for interviews at the event are fueling speculation that the park will be getting a NASCAR-themed roller coaster. "Rumors of a steel coaster well over 300-feet-tall have been making the rounds for several months," said Steve Thompson of the Mid Atlantic Coaster Club, which is based in Springfield.
