Monroe District residents will vote at new precinct
Oct. 29, 2009 1:27 pm
Residents of the James Monroe District will vote at a new polling place this year: the old King George High School. The county agreed in May to move the polling place from the King George Middle School on State Route 206 to the old high school. During last year’s election, voters had trouble finding parking spaces and many vehicles ended up on the road’s narrow shoulder. Registrar Lorrie Gump said the move would be safer and more convenient for residents. James Monroe is the largest of five precincts in King George. It has more than one-third of the county’s 13,615 registered voters. Here’s a precinct breakdown: Courthouse: 2,244 Passapatanzy: 1,206 Monroe: 4,641 Dahlgren: 2,569 Shiloh: 2,955 James Monroe also has the only contested race for a Board of Supervisors seat. John LoBuglio and Billy McCoy Jr. are challenging James Howard for the post he’s held for the past 10 years.

County’s in the black
Oct. 22, 2009 3:15 pm
Even though revenues were down from taxes, building permit fees and state and federal sources, King George County ended fiscal year 2008–2009 with an excess of almost $2 million. Most of that, or $1.19 million, came from a surplus in the school budget. The rest of the excess was money the county saved by cutting back when the economy soured, said Chairman Joe Grzeika. King George spent $1.37 million less than it had budgeted on county departments. Those cuts in spending offset the reduction in revenue, which was down 41 percent from building permit fees and 35 percent from recordation taxes—fees paid on deeds, mortgages and similar documents.

50 years for Lions
Sep. 16, 2009 12:18 pm
The supervisors last night passed a resolution recognizing the Dahlgren Lions Club for 50 years of service to the county. The volunteer group provides eye and hearing exams and glasses and hearing aids and supports the elderly, shut-ins and the disabled in the county. The Lions also help with community events, such as the county’s fall festival, Relay for Life and King George High School’s after-prom party.

Praise for other events
May 20, 2009 10:35 am
The Board of Supervisors were doling out compliments at last night's meeting. Several praised the recent King George High School production of "Big River." Supervisors were impressed by the talented ensemble, the number of students involved in the production and the acoustics of the new auditorium. The school had artwork on display as well as part of a concurrent show, and supervisors were impressed by what they saw. "We hear some things about our education not being up to par . . . but there is some amazing talent coming out of the school," said Supervisor Dale Sisson Jr. Supervisors also praised Saturday's Relay for Life event, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Despite tough economic times, residents supported the effort to raise money for cancer research. "The people in King George never fail to come through, in good times or in bad times like we're having now," said Supervisor Chairman Joe Grzeika. Listed below are the top five teams in the Relay for Life event: 1 - Win for Wesley! ($27,168.97) 2 - Friends for Life ($13,253.19) 3 - It's All About Life ($12,798.00) 4 - NSWC Federal Credit Union ($7,998.85) 5 - Heritage Hall Healthcare & Rehabilitation ($6,898.31)

Praise for county staff
May 20, 2009 10:27 am
The Board of Supervisors had nothing but good things to say about the county staff at last night's board meeting. Supervisors praised the hard-working efforts of the County Administrator Travis Quesenberry and his office staff, which includes Grace Bottomly, Marcy Feltner and Cheryl Burgess. In addition to day-to-day duties last week, the staff coordinated a business appreciation event and a company picnic for staff. "Our staff made it all possible," said Board Chairman Joe Grzeika.

Lockdown at schools
May 6, 2009 1:05 pm
We're being told that at least one school--King George Elementary School--has been on partial lockdown since Monday because of an incident that involved a school employee over the weekend. KGES Principal Ronald Monroe says he's erring on the side of caution by keeping the doors locked and having an employee monitor who enters and leaves the school. We're looking for more details. Give me an e-mail if you know something. Thanks.

Should market be KG products only?
May 6, 2009 10:57 am
All the supervisors supported the idea of the farmers market, but Cedell Brooks Jr. is wondering why sales should be limited to produce from King George fields, forests and waters. A recent Food story in The Free Lance–Star featured the various markets in the region, and King George’s was the only one that limited sales to growers from the county. Brooks wondered if that shouldn’t be expanded, especially in the spring when local gardens haven’t yielded much. What do you think?

Something strange in the sewers
May 6, 2009 10:54 am
Anyone know what’s going into the Perkins Corner Wastewater Treatment plant? Twice in the last six months, something put into the sewer has killed biological life in the plant, said Chris Thomas, who directs the Public Service Authority. His agency has pinpointed a few “potential hotspots,” he said. “We’ll talk to the owners and get an idea of what they’re using and if they’re putting something in the sewer they shouldn’t be,” he added.

Supervisors honor two
Apr. 9, 2009 4:43 pm
At Tuesday’s meeting, the Board of Supervisors publicly recognized the efforts of two dedicated community members who died recently. Board members honored: Violet Parker, a 78-year-old deaconess at Macedonia Baptist Church in Colonial Beach and long-time advocate with the Rappahannock Area on Aging. Deborah Bushrod, 52, a retired school administrator and educator for the King George County school system.
