Norman Rockwell on health
Oct. 13, 2009 11:15 am
Fans of Norman Rockwell will be able to see 11 of his paintings at the Gari Melchers Home and Studio in Stafford County, beginning Saturday, Oct. 31. The paintings are part of a travelling exhibition entitled, “Picturing Health: Norman Rockwell and the Art of Illustration.”
The show, which lasts until Jan. 31, 2010, also includes dozens of illustrations by other artists. All focus on health-related subjects, such as the doctor/patient relationship and the importance of physical fitness. The exhibition has been organized by the Rockwell Museum in Massachusetts. The paintings are from the collection of the Pfizer Corporation and date from 1930 through 1960. The works were created for two pharmaceutical companies and an optical company. The images originally appeared as posters in pharmacy windows and as magazine advertisements. Regular museum admission fees are $10 for adults and $5 for students.
The Rockwell paintings arrived at the Gari Melchers Home this week. Here, courtesy of Michelle Dolby, is a 90-second YouTube video showing one of the paintings being uncrated. Joanna Catron, curator, is pictured at left with one of the Rockwell paintings. The painting at top left is The Veterinarian from 1961.
