HISTORY

HISTORY: Formerly part of Orange County, the area that would become Culpeper County was first surveyed by George Washington in the 1750s. A Revolutionary War unit, the Culpeper Minutemen, was formed during that conflict. Confederate Gen. Ambrose Powell Hill was born in Culpeper County; Confederate Maj. John Pelham died there. Two major Civil War battles—Cedar Mountain and Brandy Station, the latter the largest cavalry battle fought in North America—occurred on county soil. Both Union and Confederate armies camped in the county for extended periods during the Civil War.
