  1. What is NIE?
Newspaper in Education is a partnership with the newspaper and local schools to promote and support the use of newspapers – print and online – as an educational resource. NIE collaborates with area schools to provide timely newspaper-based curriculum and special projects that support educational objectives. We’ll help you teach ABOUT and WITH newspapers.

  2. How do I get started?
Order an advertised NIE package with specific delivery dates and curriculum or design your own NIE package. The full-year package offered during August and September provides the best deal and includes access to all NIE resources and a bonus subscription to the e-edition.

  3. What does it cost?
Weekday rates for the print edition are 5¢ per paper for full-year orders and 9¢ per paper for weekly, monthly, and semester orders and special advertised packages. The rate for Saturday and/or Sunday papers is 48¢ per paper. A school-year subscription for the e-edition is $25. This provides daily access to the electronic edition of The Free Lance–Star for up to 35 students at a time. There is no cost for resource materials. Full-year NIE teachers receive a password to access all resources posted on the Newspaper in Education Web site. Teachers who order newspapers for a shorter unit receive curriculum to support their NIE unit.

  4. Is the e-edition the same as the print edition?
It is an exact replica of the print edition provided in pdf format. Introduced in the fall of 2008, this format provides the option for receiving newspapers electronically.

  5. What delivery day is best?
This depends on your objectives. For elementary grades, we recommend Monday’s paper because it includes the weekly Kid Scoop page and the Weekly Writing Corner. Middle and high teachers may choose to receive a class set of newspapers delivered one or more days a week. Or they may order the five-a-day reading package for the school year. To help decide which days are best for your needs, click here for a list of daily features.

  6. How many papers should I order?
We encourage elementary teachers to order one newspaper per student. Middle and high teachers may choose to order one class set of newspapers and use them with different groups of students throughout the day. Tell us what you need and we’ll help you design a package that will work for your classroom needs.

  7. How will I get my papers?
Paper editions: Newspapers are delivered to your school before 6:00 a.m. If you order more than 15 papers per delivery, papers will be bundled with your name on top. For orders of fewer than 15 papers per delivery, your papers may be combined with papers for another teacher. Please alert your school office that you are expecting deliveries of The Free Lance–Star.
E-editions: Once you order, you will receive log-in information.

  8. What if I do not receive my papers?
If you do not receive newspapers on a scheduled delivery day, contact the circulation department at delivery@freelancestar.com or 540/374-5002 before 9:00 a.m. We will do our best to get papers to you that day – if you call before 9:00 a.m. All other NIE inquiries or delivery concerns should be directed to the Newspaper in Education office at nie@freelancestar.com or 540-368-5054.

Before you call about missed papers, please make sure they are not "misplaced" at your school. If we have made a mistake, we will do everything within our power to make a correction. However, taking papers to a school when they have been delivered earlier is very costly and time-consuming.

Before calling, check all entrances to see if papers were left in the wrong spot. Possibly papers were delivered by a new or substitute driver who is not familiar with your school. Also check with other teachers who receive papers to make sure someone else has not picked up your newspapers. The BEST way to assure that YOU get YOUR papers is to ask your custodian (if he or she arrives before school opens) to take your papers to the school office and put them behind the counter for you.

  9. How will I be billed?
NIE orders must include a purchase order number or they must be paid in advance. Bills are sent to your school to the attention of accounts payable, unless you direct us otherwise. Bills are due within 30 days of receipt. Call to pay by credit card.

  10. What do I do with used newspapers?
Send them home with your students to share with their families. Or recycle them... and earn money for your school! Get your community involved in recycling and raise funds for your school. Southeast Paper Recycling Company will provide –at NO cost– a newspaper recycling bin. They will pay your school $25 per ton of paper. For more information, contact Southeast Recycling at 703/794-9198. Before you toss newspapers in the recycling bin, offer papers for students to take home to share with their families; offer newspapers to another class; save some papers for cutting and pasting activities or for language arts or math lessons.

  11. Help! How do I introduce my students to the newspaper?
Check out lesson plans and curriculum guides for introducing newspapers on the resource page for your grade-level and subject.
Ask for help or schedule a free Getting Started Workshop at your school

  12. What is the Vacation Donation Program?
The Free Lance-Star provides classroom sets of weekday newspapers for approximately one-fourth of the home subscription rate. The cost is further reduced with funding from the Vacation Donation Program. When subscribers call to temporarily stop or cancel newspaper deliveries, they are invited to donate the value of these newspapers to NIE. Their donations help subsidize the reduced rates for NIE papers. Local businesses are also invited to contribute to this fund.
