Using newspapers in the classroom increases test scores!

Of course, NIE teachers already know this. Now, we have definitive studies to prove it.

According to a study conducted for the Newspaper Association of America Foundation by Dan Sullivan, a professor at the University of Minnesota:
  • students in schools with at least some NIE programs did 10% better on standardized reading tests than those in schools with no NIE programs.
  • the intensity of service (full year?) appears to have a larger and significant effect
  • significant increases in performance were more likely to occur in middle schools
  • low income, minority and non–native English-speaking students benefit significantly from NIE programs.
