The Better Business Bureau of Central Virginia is warning consumers to be on the lookout for scammers offering supposed sales and discounts on name-brand products.
Scammers have recently been targeting consumers on social media with misleading ads for sales that claim to offer deeply discounted name brand products.
How the Scam Works: In scrolling through social media you notice an advertisement that offers name brand shoes, clothes, or electronics for a great price. One ad promotes discounts of up to 95% off!
If you click on the ad or type in the promoted URL it’ll lead you to a “shop the deals” website. If you then purchase over the internet, beware the results. Scammers either never intended to send you a product or the product they send is not the item and/or the quality promised. They simply steal your credit card information when you are prompted to pay. In other versions, the phony sites can download malware onto your computer and give scammers access to your personal information, password history, and more.
