A new store is bringing a pop of color to a long vacant storefront in downtown Fredericksburg this spring.

Alan Chalmers Fine Menswear will open March 3 at 205 Hanover St.

According to owner Sam Thomas, a 23-year-old Fredericksburg native, the store will carry ready-to-wear “southern, preppy men’s clothes and accessories.”

The name comes from his business partner Dina Alan of Alan Furs and his middle name Chalmers.

The store will carry brands such as Collared Greens, Southern Tide and Charlee Luck.

Thomas said all of his experience, attending Hampden–Sydney College, having a clothing company locally called Dogwood Black and working at an American-made textile company in Mississippi helped him refine the vision for his first retail outlet.

He also said the downtown community of merchants, more robust than it was when he grew up here, has helped him get the store off the ground.
