Southwest Airlines is expanding service from Richmond International Airport.

The Dallas-based airline said Thursday that it is adding nonstop service on Saturdays and Sundays between Richmond and Tampa International Airport starting Aug. 10.

Southwest also said its previously-operated seasonal nonstop Saturday service to Orlando, Fla. from Richmond also will begin Aug. 10.

Richmond International Airport officials said the new service is a good move.

“Tampa and Orlando are incredibly popular destinations for the region and we’re thrilled to have Southwest nonstop options to both,” said Jon E. Mathiasen, the airport's president and CEO.

The nonstop flight to Tampa leaves Richmond on Saturdays at 11:55 a.m. and arrives at 2:05 p.m. On Sundays, the flight leaves Richmond at 1:15 p.m. and arrives at 3:25 p.m.

The return nonstop on Saturdays leaves Tampa at 9:20 a.m. and arrives in Richmond at 11:25 a.m. On Sundays, the flight leaves at 2:20 p.m. and arrives 4:20 p.m.

The cost was $285.96 including taxes and fees, according to a search on Southwest’s website for a flight leaving Saturday Aug. 10 and returning Saturday Aug. 17 and for another flight leaving Sunday Aug. 11 and returning Sunday Aug. 18.

The Saturday and Sunday nonstop flights to Tampa comes as Allegiant Air is launching a twice-weekly nonstop service between Richmond and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport near Sarasota, Fla., beginning April 4. The Las Vegas carrier entered the Richmond market in February 2015 with flights to St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport, near Tampa.

Southwest's nonstop flight to Orlando leaves Richmond at 11:10 a.m. on Saturdays and arrives at 1:25 p.m. It leaves Orlando at 8:40 a.m. and arrives in Richmond at 10:40 a.m.

The cost was $157.96 including taxes and fees, according to a search on the airline's website leaving Saturday Aug. 10 and returning Saturday Aug. 17.
