EARTH FRIENDLY: Volunteers transform T-shirts into tote bags

Volunteers and members of the Fredericksburg Food Co-Op recently spent an hour repurposing T-shirts into totes to be distributed free to shoppers.

Members of the Fredericksburg Food Co-Op recently hosted a workshop for transforming T–shirts into tote bags at the Fredericksburg Branch Library. Volunteers spent an hour repurposing T–shirts into totes to be distributed by the co-op free to shoppers.

The manufacturing of plastic, paper and commercial tote bags has a high carbon footprint. Plastic bags are used for an average of 12 minutes, yet take 500 years to degrade and only 9 percent are recycled. Repurposing gently used T-shirts into earth-friendly reusable bags keeps them from ending up in the landfill.

There is no sewing involved, just bring a pair of scissors. Contact the co-op at fxbgfoodcoop@gmail.com for more information on locations and dates of upcoming events.
