A suicidal man armed with a gun and a knife was shot and seriously wounded Saturday morning during an encounter with a Louisa County sheriff’s deputy, state police said.
The sheriff’s office received a call at 8:36 a.m. from a man who provided his location and advised he was suicidal, police said.
When a deputy arrived at Hillcrest Cemetery in the 19000 block of Louisa Road, the officer encountered a man armed with a gun and a knife. During the course of the incident, the man was shot by the deputy, police said.
The deputy immediately began administering first aid and called for rescue. The man was taken to UVA Medical Center, where he is being treated for serious injuries.
The deputy was not injured during the encounter. He was placed on administrative leave pending a use-of-force investigation in accordance with Louisa Sheriff’s Office policy, police said.
Police did not identify the deputy or the man who was wounded.
