A Spotsylvania man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in a Christmas Eve crash that claimed the life a 20-year-old county woman.
Randolph Tyler Morningstar, 24, was arrested Saturday and booked into the Rappahannock Regional Jail early Sunday. According to court records, Morningstar was the driver in a Dec. 24 crash in Spotsylvania that claimed the life of Cheyanne Marie Phillips.
The single-vehicle crash occurred just after midnight on Lawyers Road near Courthouse Road, the Sheriff’s Office said at the time. Phillips, a passenger in Morningstar’s 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, died on the way to the hospital.
An affidavit for a search warrant obtained last month by Deputy Chris Smeal alleged that Morningstar lost control of his car while driving at a speed “much higher” than the speed limit. Smeal wrote that he was seeking the data recorder from the Cobalt to determine the operational conditions of the vehicle before and during the crash.
It was not clear what investigators found during the lengthy investigation that resulted in the manslaughter charge against Morningstar, who already had a March 22 trial scheduled for charges of driving revoked and speeding that he picked up earlier in December.
Morningstar and Phillips had baby boy and, according to her social media pages, were engaged.
