A local man was jailed and charged with felony offenses Sunday after he shot himself in the leg at a Spotsylvania County motel, authorities said.
Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Lt. Charles Carey said deputies went to the Econo Lodge on Jefferson Davis Highway in Spotsylvania about 11:40 p.m. Saturday after receiving a report about a man being shot.
Deputies found a man with a single gunshot wound to his lower leg, Carey said. The man told deputies that two black males had approached him outside the motel and that one of them shot him, Carey said.
Carey said detectives were called to the scene and began interviewing witnesses in an attempt to find a possible suspect. Detectives determined that there was no other suspect and that the victim had actually shot himself.
Officers searched the motel room associated with the victim and found a gun that was determined to be stolen, Carey said. The shooting victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released into police custody.
Eric Hunter Jones, 23, was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, felony receiving stolen property, reckless handling of a firearm and filing a false police report, Carey said. He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
