A 31-year-old man was killed Thursday when an out-of-control vehicle struck his vehicle head-on in the area of Shelton Shop and Winding Creek roads in Stafford County, police said.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Amanda Vicinanzo said the collision took place about 4 p.m. Omio Chowdhury of Stafford was taken to Mary Washington Hospital following the crash and was later pronounced dead.
A preliminary investigation headed by Deputy Kevin Lytle showed that a gray Nissan Xterra was heading north on Shelton Shop Road when its passenger's side tires went off the right shoulder. The Xterra traveled several hundred feet before overcorrecting and crossing the double yellow line, striking Chowdhury's Nissan Rogue head-on.
The Xterra driver, whose name was not released, was also taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Vicinanzo said. Police said both drivers were alone in their vehicles and neither was wearing a seat belt.
The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending against the Xterra driver, police said.
