A 33-year-old Culpeper man has been charged with the rape of a 7-year-old girl.
Sheriff Scott Jenkins said Culpeper County sheriff’s detectives arrested Oscar Ramirez, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, on Thursday.
Ramirez was taken into custody without incident, and is being held in the Culpeper County Jail without bond.
Investigators executed a search warrant at the man’s home. Items were seized and will be examined by a laboratory.
The offense reportedly occurred between April 6 and 7, Jenkins said in a statement Friday.
When authorities were booking Ramirez, they submitted an Illegal Alien Query to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. It returned with a confirmation.
An ICE agent responded Friday morning and placed a detainer on Ramirez for failing to report for an immigration hearing in 2006 in Houston, Jenkins said.
Ramirez will be deported to his home country after his legal proceedings in Culpeper are completed and, if convicted, he has served his sentence.
Ramirez is presumed innocent, until proven guilty, the sheriff noted.
“I’m thankful for the work of Detective Maria Rodriguez on this investigation,” Jenkins said. “This is another example of America’s need for secure borders and repair of our broken immigration system.”
