Alberta Fambrough Jackson passed away peacefully at home on November 11, 2019. She was the beloved wife of Manning L Jackson, Sr., who preceded her in death in 2012. They were blessed with two children, Manning Jackson, Jr., and her daughter Itashi Jackson, who was with her at her passing. Born in Athens, GA, she and her family relocated to Greensboro, NC, where she attended Dudley High School and eventually met her husband. They relocated to Auburn, ME, in 1955, where she worked as a nurse in the newborn nursery and later as a beautician. In 1966 they relocated to Washington, DC, where she worked as a nurse and as a detective, preventing the disappearance of prescribed narcotics at DC general hospital. After retirement they relocated to Locust Grove, where she was very active in Lake of the Woods Church as well as regularly attending Shiloh Baptist Church, New Site. She was a very spirited lady devoted to God and was also very actively involved with the civil rights movement and the NAACP both in VA and in ME where she was mentioned in a textbook about Maine studies for her participation. She is also remembered for her sharp wit, infectious laughter and good humor which has been greatly enjoyed and will be missed by her surviving 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren and many other friends and family. She is also survived by her sister Marion Dillard who lives in MD. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, November 26, at A. L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home, 200 Butternut Drive, Fredericksburg. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 27, at Lake of the Woods Church, 1 Church Lane, Locust Grove, with viewing from 10 to 11 a.m.

Glenn Garner, 67, of King George, passed away Sunday, November 24th in Fredericksburg. Glenn was the proud owner of Yak-a-Doo's in Fredericksburg. He enjoyed playing golf and cherished time with his friends and family. He never met a stranger. Glenn was known for his giving spirit and infectious smile. If you had the pleasure of knowing Glenn, you quickly learned that he lived life to the fullest and was always the life of the party! He is survived by his son Doug Garner and his wife, Mandy, Holly Pierce, his brother Bobby Garner and his wife Virginia, his sister Phyllis Young and her husband, Wayne; his grandchildren, Rynan, Ella and Paisley Garner, Leland Pierce, and Eliana Audelo, one aunt and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Edna Garner, and a sister Betty Jane Quann. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at Two Rivers Baptist Church in King George, VA with a service to begin at 12 noon at Two Rivers Baptist Church, with internment to follow at Potomac Baptist Church Cemetery. Jane Beverley Courtney George, 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 24, 2019 in Reedville, Virginia. Jane was born at Royal Oak Farm, Kinsale, Virginia on June 29, 1929. She is survived by her husband of 67 years Donald Haydon George; her sister Nell Carter Courtney; and her two sons, Donald H George Jr. and William Courtney George and his wife Debbie. She is also survived by her 5 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren and a large loving extended family of nieces, nephews, in-laws and neighbors. Jane is preceded in death by her parents Emma Cornwell and Edwin Lacey Courtney; her brothers Edwin Lacey Courtney Jr., William Hank Courtney, and Warren Jeremiah Courtney. She is also preceded in death by her daughter Beverley Elizabeth George Greene. Jane was a devoted homemaker and an extraordinary cook. She welcomed family and friends to their home and always served them with love. Most of Reedville saw her every morning when she would walk her dog Sassy down Main Street regardless of the weather. Jane always had a kind word and loving smile for all she encountered. She will be missed but her kind spirit and generosity will live through her family and those who knew her. A celebration of Jane's life will be held Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 11:00 am at Fairport Baptist Church with interment to follow at Roseland Cemetery in Reedville.

John W. Meadows, Sr., 79, of Fredericksburg and Madison County passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Mary Washington Hospital. John was born in Charlottesville on August 12, 1940. After operating his own business for over 25 years, John W. Meadows Welding Services, he joined Frackelton Block Company in 1986 as the plant manager where he served faithfully until his retirement. He enjoyed a good football game, a great meal and anything sweet, especially ice cream. He loved the mountains, the land, and his numerous collections of old things. Survivors include his two loving children, John Jr. "JW" (Tanya) and Robyn Taylor (Chris); his beautiful grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews that he adored; an abundance of wonderful friends; and his longtime companion and dearest friend, Mary Carter Frackelton, who has been by his side. The family of John W. Meadows would like to thank Dee Ann Yurgel, and Rick and Ginny Lewis for their kindness and care. A very special thank you to Denise Yurgel and Phil Oliver for their unwavering kindness and compassion to John and his family. Thank you also to the many doctors, nurses, CNAs and sitters John had at the hospital. You treated him with care and dignity and his family is very appreciative. John didn't believe in throwing money away, so we will only be holding a family night. J. William "Bill" Kemp, Jr., 76, Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Mary Washington, died peacefully at his home November 24, 2019. Born in Carthage, MS on December 7, 1942, to Burma Wilkins Kemp and James William Kemp. Bill earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Millsaps College, an M. A. from Mississippi State University, and a PhD from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. In a career that spanned 35 years, he earned recognition as a powerful and creative teacher, a thoughtful and capable leader, and a valued colleague and friend. His primary academic specialties were the works of Shakespeare, textual criticism, and English Renaissance literature. He was an early advocate and adopter of a wide range of instructional techniques. He was a thoughtful film scholar and critic whose work on George Roy Hill appeared in an encyclopedia of great filmmakers. He co-authored a chapter on animal communication. Bill was twice Chair of the Department of English, Linguistics, and Speech. His other leadership roles included Director of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree program and Assistant Dean for Projects and Programs. He was literary advisor for many Shakespeare productions at Mary Washington. Primarily, Bill was a teacher who enjoyed each opportunity to bring the literature he loved to life for each new group of students. Always looking for ways to foster the love of language and the life of the mind, Bill began a weekly departmental tradition called "Thursday Poems," in which colleagues and students would read their favorite poems for half an hour at the end of the workday. In 2000, he received the Grellet C. Simpson Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, UMW's most prestigious faculty award. An annual symposium showcasing critical, creative, and original works by students in the Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication is named in his honor. Survivors include his sister, Judy Lauren Holley of Baton Rouge, LA; sister-in-law Linda Scheffel of Jackson, MS; and six nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his beloved wife, Mary Ivy Kemp. Bill Kemp was a wonderful colleague, a devoted husband, and a faithful friend. He will be missed by all those who conversed with, worked with, and learned from him. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
