An educator with more than 21 years of experience will take the helm of Caroline County schools beginning next month.
At the School Board’s meeting Monday, Chairman George Spaulding announced that George Parker III of Virginia Beach would be the division’s next superintendent.
He fills the vacancy left by former division head Greg Killough, who left earlier this year for a position as head of Roanoke County schools.
Parker will officially begin July 1.
“I’m looking forward to starting to work and getting to know Caroline County,” Parker said. “I consider this a position of service.”
He also said he was looking forward to learning and addressing the needs of Caroline’s residents, students and parents.
Parker is coming to Caroline from his position as assistant superintendent of high schools for Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
There, he supervised the school division’s 11 high schools and four alternative centers.
A Tidewater region native, Parker has been teaching, coaching or administrating in Virginia Beach since 1993. He began with teaching mathematics at Bayside High School, where he was also the varsity wrestling coach.
Parker was principal of Green Run High School from 2005 to 2013, which received an award from the College Board during his tenure for helping students achieve access to higher education.
In 2013, he became assistant superintendent of secondary schools for Virginia Beach City schools, later assistant superintendent of high schools.
He has also served as an adjunct professor at Averett University in Danville and Old Dominion University in Norfolk since 2010.
He has also held positions as president of the Virginia Beach Association of Secondary School Principals and chairman of the Beach District Principals Committee.
Prior to entering education, Parker spent four years in the Navy, where he served as a surface warfare officer.
He has undergraduate and master’s degrees from Norfolk State University, as well as a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech.
Parker will be joined by his wife, LaTonya, and four children—Courtney, Adeja, Kaila and Langston—in Caroline.
