Dovetail Cultural Resource Group, a Fredericksburg-based firm, has donated $26,000 to the University of Mary Washington to establish an endowed scholarship for historic preservation students.

Pending approval by UMW’s board of visitors, the scholarship will be named for the firm, which is owned by Kerri Barile—a 1994 UMW graduate—and her business partner Michael Carmody.

“Mary Washington has given so much to me personally—and now is providing our company with close connections to professors, students and alumni,” said Barile, who majored in historic preservation at the university, in a press release.

Dovetail has employed more than 60 UMW alumni and hosted several dozen internships for Mary Washington students since it was established in 2005.

The firm is conducting fieldwork at the site of Fredericksburg’s future Riverfront Park and just completed studies of the tunnel running underneath George Street and of the public slave auction block.
