CHARLOTTESVILLE — A William Monroe High School graduating senior who also takes classes at Piedmont Virginia Community College has received a $301,480 scholarship to attend Duke University.

Kamdon Early of Stanardsville received a prestigious Gates Millennium scholarship. The program is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and aims to increase opportunities for high-achieving minority students with financial need. Early has been dual-enrolled at William Monroe and PVCC, earning a high school diploma and an associate’s degree simultaneously. He plans to study philosophy and pre-law at Duke and will be on full scholarship.

William Monroe has a standing dual-enrollment program with PVCC that has graduated an increasing number of Greene County students with both high school and associate’s degrees or certificates each year since 2016.

The Gates Millennium Scholars program has funded over 20,000 students’ undergraduate and graduate education since 2000, according to its website.
