Jan. 14--A surfer in Rodanthe was bitten by a shark Monday afternoon.
The 26-year-old from Manteo was taken to the Outer Banks Hospital about 2:30 p.m. Monday with injuries that were not life-threatening, said Boone Vandzura, chief ranger with Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
The man was paddling in the surf when he was bitten on the foot, Vandzura said. The incident happened near Sudie Payne Road in Rodanthe.
The bite victim is Samuel Horne from Manteo, according to his cousin Justin Copeland. Horne will get stitches or staples to repair the injury, he said. Copeland was not with Horne while he was surfing Monday.
Copeland, Horne and others from Manteo have surfed for years on the Outer Banks without getting bit, Copeland said. They had never seen a shark in the winter, but the water was about 60 degrees, a temperature more akin to early summer than January, he said.
Sharks are plentiful in Outer Banks waters, especially during the summer.
The injury will not stop Horne from surfing, Copeland said.
"No, he'll get back out there," he said.
