Shirley J. Peyton of King George County, Va. entered into eternal rest at VCU Critical Care Hospital, Richmond, Virginia, on Tuesday, March 13, 2018. Over the course of her 66 years, she touched countless lives with her warm, loving manner and mischievous sense of humor. She blessed multiple generations of children in the King George County School system as a devoted kindergarten teacher for over 40 years. Most of all, she was a devoted mother, sister, niece and cousin to her family, both near and far. Shirley was born on June 15, 1951, to the late James Isaiah and Emma Louise Williams of King George County, Virginia. She was the fourth of sixth children and demonstrated her trademark warmth and appreciation for education at an early age. She was a proud product of the King George County Public Schools, graduating from King George High School in 1969. Guided by a passion to teach, she attended Virginia Union University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education. Upon her graduation, she began her decades long teaching career as kindergarten teacher at King George Elementary School, where she was employed until her passing. From her childhood, Shirley was a faithful and dedicated member of the Antioch Baptist Church in King George, where she was baptized at an early age. Over the years, she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and was a leader of the Children's Church. She was also a member of the Missionary Society and the Kitchen Ministry. Music was an important expression of her worship, leading her to found and direct the Angelic Starlettes, the children's choir. She was also a founding member of the Authentic Gospel Singers. In addition to her teaching career and church activities, Shirley was an adult volunteer summer 4-H Camp counselor for over 25 years, joyfully joining her fellow adult leaders and hundreds of campers each summer for outdoor adventures and activities. Shirley leaves to mourn five children, Christopher Peyton (Patricia), Renae Peyton, Nicole Harry (James), Christopher LeVere, and Ashley Johnson; four siblings, Barbara W. Finks (Edward), Warren E. Williams (Sheila), Alvin E. Williams, and Marie W. Bragg (Judson); eleven grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. A wake will be held Friday, March 23, from 6-8 p.m. at the Antioch Baptist Church, 11102 James Madison Parkway, King George, Virginia. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 24, at 12 noon at the King George High School, 10100 Foxes Way, King George, Virginia. The funeral will be preceded by a viewing from 9 a.m.-12 noon at the King George High School. Memorial contributions may be made to the Antioch Baptist Church in King George, Va. or the Shirley's Child 4-H Scholarship Fund. Services entrusted to Lee Funeral Home, Warsaw, Virginia.
